From failure to “Wow”!
The first thing I’m inclined to say about this painting is that this canvas has been on a journey! What started as a very experimental and failed corporate submission, turned into a painting which is truly one of my all-time favorites and has a texture and story that could never happen exactly this way again.
I need to be upfront with this as well, because this canvas has taken a beating (literally) and the scars are evident. Electric sander, knife, etc., etc. No worries, tho. The canvas is stable as there many layers of paint, kraft paper, medium and varnish. The resulting texture is really what makes this painting so uniquely special.
And you know, in “failure to wow” there is both a struggle and a life lesson of hope and redemption. Which is why I have paired a scripture truth with this painting:
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.””

As for the original inspiration, including the actual colors, I witnessed this heart stopping scene in real life on Long Island in the Bahamas. It’s probably the most remote island—so peaceful and really no tourists to speak of. The morning view from the deck came alive as the dramatically moody clouds gave way to the warmth of the new sun as it caught the green of the mangroves and highlighted everything with a welcoming amber glow.
I pray bringing this painting into your home or workspace will be a continual reminder of God’s love, hope and mercy.
